Installation Guide
==================
To get a working system you will need both NewsBase and TTFN, if you have
not downloaded both applications then do so before proceeding any further.
This document covers the installation of both !NewsBase and !TTFN.
Introduction
------------
NewsBase & TTFN work together to provide similar functionality to that offered
by other TCPIP aware newsreaders. Those of you who are familiar with ReadNews
will find a lot of the following material very familiar.
Newsbase - Is a news debatcher, server and database manager. It performs
a similar role to that of !Incorp and much more.
TTFN - Is a newsreader that utilises NewsBase to present articles to the
reader.
The two communicate via WIMP messages.
Recommendations
---------------
+ place all your internet related applications in one directory, either in
the root of your hard disc, or one directory below. This is recommended
as the directory structure under !NewsDir becomes quite deep, and RISC OS
stops caching directory information after about 10 levels, making access
much slower. Versions of NewsBase 0.44 and later address this problem to
a certain degree, but long newsgroup names still mean the directory
structure is deep.
You will need:
--------------
The latest version of NewsBase (at the time of writing v0.51)
The latest version of TTFN (at the time of writing v0.36)
If you are switching from a version of readnews
-----------------------------------------------
Make sure your copy of !NewsDir has been seen by the filer *before*
running NewsBase. NewsBase will then automatically convert your NewsDir
to the format required for NewsBase operation. Do not worry - it's contents
will be preserved.
Installing NewsBase
-------------------
1. Unpack !NewsBase from the newsbase archive to the chosen location on
your hard disc (see "Recommendations" above).
2. If you are a ReadNews user then you may migrate your existing !NewsDir
to the new system, a ReadNews 0.24 !NewsDir will be transparent in
operation - version 0.30 !NewsDir will be automatically detected and
confirmation of conversion will be required before it is performed.
3. Run !NewsBase.
4. Click with *adjust* on the NewsBase icon that has just appeared on your
iconbar. The NewsBase choices window should open.
5. Recommended settings for other options are set up as default, for a
detailed description of each option please read the documentation
accompanying NewsBase
6. Click on "Save" so the chosen options are written out to disk.
Installing TTFN
---------------
1. Copy !TTFN from the archive to the chosen location on your hard disc.
2. Run !TTFN.
3. Open the TTFN menu and choose "Users..."
4. In section labelled "Create User", type in your chosen username and
click on "Create". In the "User Details" section choose you newly
selected username, enter a real-life name and click on Set.
Close the User Management window.
5. Change the currently selected user to the one you just created by means
of the submenu called "User" from the TTFN iconbar menu.
5. Click on the !TTFN icon on your iconbar with *adjust*. The !TTFN setup
window will appear. Change the default user to that of your newly
created user-id.
6. Change any other options you wish (see the documentation that accompanies
!TTFN for a full description of all the options), though the defaults
should be adequate for the majority of users.
7. Click on "Save" to write the new options to disk.
8. Click on the !TTFN icon with *select. If you have just migrated from
a version of ReadNews (i.e. you have an existing !NewsDir), NewsBase
will now generate an index for each of your groups.
** This may take some time ** please be patient - it's a one off thing,
if you want some progress indication, click on the newsbase icon with
select to reveal the NewsBase status window.
Eventually a list of newsgroups very much like ReadNews should appear on
your desktop.
You are now ready to begin using them in ernest!
Queries, suggestions, *constructive* criticism and bug reports should be
addressed to:
allan@mnhep1.hep.umn.edu (in the case of !NewsBase)
ttfn@wong.demon.co.uk (in the case of !TTFN)
Good Luck (you probably won't need it though :-) )
